I love teaching singing and have been giving singing lessons both privately and in schools for over 25 years. I am currently a Visiting Singing Teacher at Mayfield and at St Christopher’s, Hove teaching students from Year 3 to Year 13. I have experience in teaching across the spectrum of neurodiversity, including students with dyslexia, ADD and autism. I have previously held singing teaching positions at Brighton College, Notting Hill and Ealing High School for Girls, Falkner House, Dragon School and Queen Mary’s College.
I hold a BA Honours in Music from York University where singing was my principal instrument with piano as my second instrument. I subsequently trained as a professional singer with teachers including Julie Kennard, Colin Baldy, Arwel Treharne Morgan and Anne-Marie Speed, and also on English National Opera’s performance course The Knack. This extensive training has given me an in-depth understanding of the singing voice and how to develop it in my students.
“Our daughter, Anna, has been having singing lessons with Hilary for over 7 years. She started as a young 8-year old in school and is now studying for her Grade 8 ABRSM singing exam. Hilary has been a fantastic teacher and mentor for Anna in her singing exams and preparing her for her successful auditions for the National Youth Choir and Glyndebourne Christmas Choir. As parents of a gifted singing student, it has been a real pleasure to see the development and maturity of her voice and ability to sing, due in a major part to the “best singing teacher in the world!”” Mike and Rachel
Having worked throughout the UK as an opera, concert, choral and church singer, I understand what it’s like to rehearse and prepare for performances, to have to maintain optimal vocal health and to deal with the stress that can come with performing. I have appeared at the BBC Proms, the Classical Brits, the Royal Opera House and on TV and film soundtracks, sung regularly with the special services choir at Westminster Abbey, and held positions with the professional choirs of Chelsea Old Church and St Anselm and St Cecilia, Holborn.
My training as a singing teacher includes completing the Compulsory Figures and Voice Qualities in Estill Voice Craft and training on The Art of Teaching Singing (London College of Music and Media). I’m always looking to extend my knowledge and skill as a singing teacher, and regularly attend lectures and workshops on a wide range of vocal and performance issues. I am a member of the British Voice Association, The Association of Teachers of Singing and the Musician’s Union.
